Who
The chairman of the department of plastic surgery at the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, Aston is one of the most popular plastic surgeons with aging socialites. He's also married to one—Muffie Potter Aston.
Backstory
A Virginia native, Aston attended UVA both as an undergrad and for med school and went on to complete his residency at UCLA. After a fellowship at Johns Hopkins, Aston moved to New York to complete his training at NYU. He's been in New York ever since, and now heads up the cosmetic surgery practice at Manhattan Eye and Ear (or MEETH), which performs more cosmetic procedures than any other hospital and remains one of the most prestigious plastic surgery centers in the city. (Fellow plastic-surgeon-to-the-stars Dan Baker is affiliated with MEETH as well.) Aston is also a professor at NYU, where he does something most top plastic surgeons don't bother with: he teaches.
Of note
Aston has long cultivated an A-list following. Tipper Gore, Catherine Deneuve, Mary Archer, Carolina Herrera, Anna Wintour and her beau Shelby Bryan are rumored to be among his patients. Bob Dole has also spent time in Aston's O.R.—the politico reportedly visited Dr. Aston shortly before he ran for president in 1996. While Aston does it all, from nose jobs to tummy tucks to implants, he's particularly renowned for his face lifts. One of his inventions is "FAME"—finger-assisted malar elevation—which he uses during procedures to adjust the soft tissue of the face in an effort to avoid that scary, stretched-out look that so many facelifts leave behind. Yet it hasn't been the easiest few years for the celebrity sawbones. In 2004, Aston was in the spotlight after two patients at MEETH died within a month of each other, including Olivia Goldsmith, the bestselling author of The First Wives Club. (A third woman suffered serious brain damage during a procedure at the hospital.) The episode cast a pall over the institution and led to millions in settlements by the hospital and the anesthesiologists involved, although Aston's reputation—and that of the hospital—appears to have recovered.
AKA
His patients call him Dr. Aston, but if you want to address him by his first name, it's pronounced "Shir-ELLE."
Personal
Dr. Aston is married to his second wife, Muffie Potter Aston, a socialite who appears to have spent her share of time under the knife. (Although it looks like Dr. Aston has had his share of work done, too, he claims his youthfulness is thanks to "Oil of Olay" and "good genes.) The plastic surgeon had three sons with his late wife, Michelle Sykes Aston: Jay, Matt, and Bradford. In 2006, he and Muffie had twin daughters, Bracie and Ashleigh, who were born to a surrogate mother. The family lives on Park Avenue and has a vacation home in Locust Valley.
