Who
One of the few women at the top of the Wall Street food chain, Krawcheck is the former CFO of Citigroup and the head of the bank's wealth management division.
Backstory
Raised in South Carolina—she was homecoming queen at her Charleston high school—Krawcheck attended the University of North Carolina and earned an MBA from Columbia before staring her career at Salomon Brothers and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. Krawcheck took several years off after the birth of her first child and returned to the Street in the early '90s as a research analyst at Sanford Bernstein, where she developed a reputation for her contrarian calls. She eventually rose to become CEO of the boutique research house. But in 2002 she jumped ship when Sandy Weill lured her to Citigroup to serve as CEO of Salomon Smith Barney, part of an effort to sweep out the Augean stables in the wake of investment research scandals. Touted as "Mrs. Clean," it took the brainy analyst just two years to graduate to Citigroup CFO in November 2004.
In early 2007, Chuck Prince reshuffled management and placed Krawcheck in charge of the company's wealth management division, a position previously occupied by Todd Thomson, who was kicked to the curb amid controversy and reports of an "inappropriate" relationship with CNBC's Maria Bartiromo. The switch struck many as a demotion. But Citi strenuously denied that the move was a step down, and Krawcheck claimed she'd never been particularly happy as the company's CFO. Today she's in charge of one of the largest wealth management businesses in the world with nearly $1.4 trillion in client assets, and reports to Citi's new CEO, Vikram Pandit.
For the record
Krawcheck arrived at Citi thanks to a two-year pay package worth $30 million, which immediately earned her the nickname "Sallie Paycheck" much to her chagrin. It's considerably better, though, than the name she was given by the bullies at her middle school in South Carolina, "Sally Crotch-Check."
Board game
Krawcheck sits on the boards of Carnegie Hall and her alma mater, UNC. She's also on the board of overseers of Columbia Business School along with Henry Kravis, Jerry Speyer, Arthur Samberg, and Mario Gabelli, among others.
Personal
Krawcheck is married to Gary Appel, vice chairman of the private equity fund Castle Harlan. The couple lives on Park Avenue in the same building as Avon CEO Andrea Jung. They spend summers at their four-acre estate in Quogue, which they purchased for $9.25 million in 2004. The four-bedroom house, which was designed by Robert A.M. Stern, boasts a 60-foot-long pool and a deep-water dock along 600 feet of Shinnecock Bay.
