Who
A former go-go dancer and occasional Martha Graham impersonator, Move has since become a modern dance icon and downtown arts fixture.
Backstory
Move was raised in rural Virginia, and in the late '80s he moved to New York where he was a go-go dancer at clubs like Limelight, Red Zone, and the Roxy. He also worked as a bouncer (he's 6'4") and spent time vamping up and down the catwalk as a model. In 1990 he was one of the creators of Jackie 60, a weekly cabaret act in the meatpacking district that attracted regulars like Marc Jacobs and Debbie Harry. As part of a tribute to choreographers, Move decided to do an impression of Martha Graham and it was so eerily dead-on that it was made into its own show, Martha@Mother, in 1996. The popular show ran for three years and attracted a long list of dance luminaries, including Mikhail Baryshnikov, Merce Cunningham and Mark Morris. Move ended up playing Graham in the 2003 biopic Ghostlight, and the Graham Company recognized him on stage at its 80th anniversary celebration.
In recent years Move's been busy as a choreographer and director, too. Mikhail Baryshnikov asked him to create a piece for his White Oak Dance Project—resulting in 2002's The Show (Achilles Heels). Move also directed Isaac Mizrahi in the designer's one-man show in 2000, and more recently choreographed Amy Sedaris's dances in the 2006 movie Strangers with Candy. Move formed his own modern dance company, MoveOpolis! in 2006.
AKA
Move's real name is Richard Winberg. It was club promoter and convicted killer Michael Alig who christened him Move.
On screen
Move's gender-bending talents won him a recurring role as a coach on the 2003 A&E show, Role Reversal, a reality show in which the subjects tried to pass as members of the opposite sex.
Personal
Move was once linked to film/theater director Stephen Daldry. He lives on West 43rd Street.
