Who

As an internationally renowned headache specialist, Richard Lipton is who people go to when they want the pounding to stop: He's the head of Montefiore Hospital's Headache Unit.

Backstory

After graduating from medical school at the University of Chicago, Lipton made his way to the Bronx to complete his residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He's now a professor of neurology and epidemiology at Albert Einstein. He's also one of the city's top headache gurus and runs the Headache Unit at Montefiore Medical Center, one of the largest headache specialty practices in the nation. When he's not treating patients, Lipton also does research on migraine pain.

On the job

At the oldest headache center in the country—it was founded more than 60 years ago—Lipton handles more than 4,300 patients a year, or as many as 150 on a busy week. He oversees a staff of eight physicians and nurses—including a pain-control specialist—and is especially good at diagnosing migraines, a tricky business as half of migraine sufferers are misdiagnosed. Lipton's also been known to use Botox as a treatment option: It prevents headaches as well as getting rid of those pesky wrinkles.

In print

Lipton has co-authored five headache guides, including Wolff's Headaches and Other Head Pain, Headache in Primary Care, Headache in Clinical Practices, Migraines: Beating the Odds, and Migraine and Other Headache Disorders.

Personal

Lipton lives with his wife Amy in a Colonial-style home in Greenwich.
