Who
Ray McGuire is head of global investment banking at Citigroup.
Backstory
A native of Dayton, Ohio, McGuire says he wanted to be a doctor and lawyer growing up. He became a lawyer and a banker instead, earning his bachelor's, law degree and MBA at Harvard before starting his career as a lawyer at Skadden, Arps. Following a stint at the law firm Patterson, Belknap, Webb & Tyler, McGuire embarked on a Wall Street merry-go-round, working in the M&A department at First Boston, as a partner at Wasserstein Perella, and as a managing director in M&A at Merrill Lynch before joining Morgan Stanley as co-head of the M&A group. In 2005, McGuire departed Morgan after a number of senior executives (including Joe Perella and Vikram Pandit) bid adieu to the firm during the tumultuous tenure of Phil Purcell. After concluding his final deal at Morgan—he advised Unilever on the sale of its fragrance business to Coty—he started Citigroup in July 2005.
Of note
McGuire has handled a number of big deals since arriving at Citi: He represented David Koch's Koch Industries in its $13.2 billion takeover of Georgia-Pacific and advised on the 2006 takeover of BellSouth by AT&T and the leveraged buyout of healthcare provider HCA by a private equity consortium including Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, Bain Capital, Merrill Lynch Global Private Equity and Thomas Frist. More recently, he worked on Time Warner's spinoff of Time Warner Cable. McGuire reports to John Havens, who, in turn, reports to the bank's CEO, Vikram Pandit.
Board game
A fixture on the non-profit scene, McGuire serves as a trustee of New York-Presbyterian, the New York Public Library, Lincoln Center, International Center of Photography, and the Thelma Golden-led Studio Museum in Harlem. He's also on the board of the Whitney, alongside Leonard Lauder, Eric Mindich, Steve Roth, Wilbur Ross, Victor Ganzi, and Beth Rudin DeWoody, among others.
Campaign trail
McGuire's an active Democrat. He served as a "bundler" for Barack Obama, reaching out to his counterparts on the Street to help raise money for Obama's presidential campaign.
Personal
The unmarried McGuire lives in the San Remo on Central Park West where his neighbors include Diane Keaton and Scott Rudin. He spends weekends at his house in Bridgehampton, which he purchased for $2.5 million in 2000.
