Who

The Canadian import is the sardonic morning anchor of the cable news network NY1.

Backstory

Kiernan started out in radio and TV news in his native Canada before crossing the border in 1996 to take over NY1's Fortune Business Report. A year later, he took over the morning anchor role on the upstart local news network, and he's been sitting in the anchor chair ever since. These days he's best known and most beloved for "In the Papers," a segment in which he summarizes selections from NYC's newspapers with deadpan wit. Kiernan's also done work on the side for other networks: He hosted the short-lived WB game show Studio 7 and currently hosts VH1 quiz show World Series of Pop Culture. Kiernan earns a paltry sum compared to the multi-million salaries of national news personalities (it's been reported that he makes $200,000 a year), and his talent and popularity have led to many far more lucrative offers over the years. (In 2001, New York quoted a colleague who said, "He'll get snapped up within a year.") Thus far, though, Kiernan has chosen to remain at the DIY local network, where he gets to be the big fish in a small pond.

On the side

Kiernan has had a handful of cameos on film and in TV over the years. He played himself in The Interpreter and played the role of a news anchor on the TV show Spin City and in the 2006 film Night at the Museum.

Personal

He and his wife, Dawn, have two daughters, Maeve and Lucy, and live on the Upper West Side.
