Hair guru Mark Garrison runs the Upper East Side salon that bears his name.

Backstory

North Carolina native Garrison says he was torn between becoming a veterinarian or a hairdresser as a kid. Fortunately for the socialite set, he chose the latter. Following beauty school and a stint at a San Francisco salon, Garrison moved to Paris, where he worked under hair guru Jean Louis David, before moving to New York in the late 1980s to work for Frédéric Fekkai at his Midtown salon. In 2003, Garrison—who had by then established himself as of the salon's stars with a long client list to match—headed out on his own, purchasing a townhouse on East 60th Street for $3.5 million to house his eponymous salon. He's since tended to the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Jerry Seinfeld, Hugh Jackman, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Marisa Tomei, Courtney Love and Sandra Bullock.

The gay stylist lives on East 68th Street; his apartment houses the mammoth collection of vintage suits he's acquired over the years. He has a weekend home in Bellport.

No joke

Garrison isn't Jewish (he was raised a Southern Baptist), but he's become something of a superstar in the wealthy, ultra-Orthodox Jewish community. Married Orthodox women—who have to cover their hair—pay Garrison up to $600 to have their wigs clipped and styled.
