Who
Marci Klein is the co-producer of Saturday Night Live and the president of Lorne Michaels' SNL Studios Television. Her dad also happens to be Calvin Klein.
Backstory
Marci's parents, Calvin Klein and his first wife, Jayne Centre, divorced when she was a little kid and she grew up living with her mom, attending Dalton before heading off to Emerson and later transferring to Brown. In 1989, she took a job on the set of Lorne Michaels's Saturday Night Live. As the show's talent coordinator, Klein was responsible for wrangling celebrity hosts and handing out coveted live tickets to VIP guests. She worked her way up the ladder over the years: She's now the co-producer of the show and president of SNL Studios Television. As Michaels' right hand at the company, she has sway over the who's hired as part of the cast as well as the A-list talent invited to host the show. But she's dabbled outside SNL, too. With Michaels, she's an executive producer of Tina Fey's NBC comedy 30 Rock.
For the record
Known for maintaining a relatively low profile—in contrast to her famous father, Marci is rarely photographed at parties or events—she did make an unwitting appearance on SNL in 2004. After Ashlee Simpson's infamous lip-synching incident, Klein's horrified reaction ended up plastered all over the internet.
Personal
Klein is married to former model Scott Murphy; the two have a young son named Nicholas. In November 2006, she sold her nine-room penthouse at the American Thread Building for $9.9 million and moved into a $10 million apartment in the New Museum Building at 158 Mercer. (Bruce Springsteen is now her neighbor). Family friend David Geffen—who manages her trust—negotiated the sale and purchase of the apartments. Klein and Murphy also have a home in LA.
True story
In February 1978, an 11-year-old Marci was abducted on her way to school. Her dad received a ransom call later that day and was instructed to pack up $100,000 in cash and leave it in the lobby of the Pan Am building. Calvin followed the instructions and Marci was soon returned unharmed. The kidnappers? Klein's baby-sitter, Paule Ransay, her half-brother, and a close friend. The three were arrested two days later.
