Who
Lady Bunny is a drag performer, comedian, and occasional DJ, otherwise known—at least to the Department of Motor Vehicles—as Jon Ingle.
Backstory
A thoroughly Southern girl from Chattanooga, Bunny honed her drag skills at Atlanta bars with her good friend RuPaul before landing in New York in 1984. She worked as a go-go dancer at the East Village's Pyramid Club and in 1985 launched Wigstock, an outdoor drag festival held in Tompkins Square Park on Labor Day. The first event attracted 1,000 people; within a decade, 50,000 revelers were turning up for the fest at the Christopher Street Piers. Memorable highlights include Deee-lite's 1990 performance of "Groove Is In The Heart," and 1994's staged bitch-slapping fight between Deborah Harry and two drag queens who'd sung a joke rendition of "Rapture."
Of note
The last day-long Wigstock was held in 2001, but the festival has since been resurrected as a two-hour set as part of Howl, a collection of summer arts events in Alphabet City. But Bunny remains a ubiquitous downtown social presence year-round where she can be found (easily, given her appearance) mixing it up at parties and fashion events. She also contributes fashion bitchery to US Weekly, writes songs for herself and others, performs x-rated song parodies (like her Whitney Houston spoof called "I Will Always Smoke You," a fictional ode from Houston to her crack pipe) and has performed on stage with Richard Move, Murray Hill, John Cameron Mitchell, RuPaul, and Rufus Wainwright. Bunny also gets the call whenever a TV show or film is looking to add a little drag: She's had cameos on Sex and the City, Party Girl and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar.
The look
And what a look it is. The 5'11" performer is usually in six-inch heels, and when her impressively huge wig is added to the mix, the ensemble reaches close to seven feet.
Personal
Good news, boys: Lady Bunny is single. She lives on Greenwich Avenue in the West Village.
