Who
Keledjian is the founder of Intermix, the chain of boutiques that serves up a high/low mix to twenty- and thirty-something women who aspire to a Sex and the City lifestyle.
Backstory
Keledjian grew up in Beirut, the son of French-Armenian parents, and moved to the US at the age of 14. As a student at NYU, a part time job at leather boutique Botticelli piqued his interest in retail. In 1993, with his older brother Haro, he opened the first branch of Intermix in the Flatiron district, attracting attention for "intermixing" different designers, brands and price points. Keledjian's strategy of selling $2,000 Chloe jackets, jewelry by Kenneth Jay Lane and $30 t-shirts has paid off. The company now has 18 locations across the country, including five in Manhattan and one in Southampton, and many more on the way. (Hopefully Keledjian won't have any more bad luck with construction—in March 2006, a massive fire burned down the original Fifth Avenue location, just two weeks after it had been extensively renovated.) Although the burgeoning retail business is still principally owned by Keledjian and his brother, in July 2007 the brothers sold a minority stake to the New York private equity firm Goode Partners.
Grudge
There's a longstanding feud between Intermix and Scoop, the clothing chain founded by Stefani Greenfield. The two chains have a similar concept and target demographic–and SoHo stores within steps of each other–although Intermix predates Scoop by three years.
Personal
The single Keledjian lives on West 23rd Street. He can occasionally be found zipping around town in an Aston Martin with the vanity plate "INTERMIX."
