Who
One of the city's reigning queens of luxury real estate, Sloane is the top co-op broker at Brown Harris Stevens.
Backstory
For much of her life, Sloane's full time job was being a professional politician's wife in Kentucky—her husband is Dr. Harvey I. Sloane, who served two terms as mayor of Louisville in the '70s and '80s. She turned to real estate in the early '80s, after the late Laurence Rockefeller asked her to help sell a development of his at Beaverkill Valley in the Catskills. Sloane joined Brown Harris Stevens in 1986. Now regarded as a master of co-op transactions, she's sold over a billion dollars' worth of top-shelf properties to date.
Of note
It was Sloane who sold Bill and Hillary Clinton their house in Chappaqua in 2000 (and, having picked up some political skills herself, reportedly refused to accept a commission). She also brokered the sales of Robert Redford's $10 million four-bedroom Fifth Avenue penthouse in 2002, as well as Kenneth Cole's 12-room, $15.7 million duplex at 927 Fifth Avenue in 2004. She's also repped Diane Sawyer, bigtime Democratic donors Carl Spielvogel and Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel, Patricia Duff, produer Marty Richards, and Donald Trump—in 2007, she had the $42 million listing for a penthouse at Trump Park Avenue.
Campaign trail
It's no coincidence that the Clintons picked Sloane to be their real estate broker—although it's been years since her husband held office, she's a prominent Democratic fundraiser. During the 2004 presidential election she donated more money to Democratic candidates than any other BHS broker. She also served as a campaign adviser to Howard Dean. Naturally, she donated money to Hillary's presidential campaign in 2008.
Personal
Sloane and her husband live at 715 Park Avenue. The politically-connected couple also have a residence in Washington, DC.
Scandal
Sloane has a checkered financial past. When she lived in Kentucky, she spent $125,000 at a clothing store between 1985 and 1988 and somehow neglected to pay for most of it; the store slapped her with a lawsuit in 1998, demanding more than $100,000. In 2008, the Albany County district attorney initiated an investigation into Sloane's finances for allegedly evading payment of $650,000 worth of taxes.
