Who
Winkelried served as co-president and co-COO of Goldman Sachs until March of 2009.
Backstory
A Millburn, NJ native and the son of a real estate appraiser, Winkelried attended the University of Chicago on a scholarship and stayed for business school, earning his MBA in 1982. He joined Goldman after graduating, and has been there ever since. Rising through the investment banking business, Winkelried was named a partner in 1990; after a five-year stint running leveraged finance, in 2000 he was tapped to head up Goldman's esteemed fixed income, currency and commodities division, along with Lloyd Blankfein. In 2005, Winkelried was picked to head up the global investment banking division. He was appointed co-COO with Gary Cohn and named to Goldman's board a year later, after Hank Paulson stepped down to become Treasury Secretary and Blankfein was named CEO. Winkleried announced plans to retire in February of 2009 and officially stepped down on March 31, 2009.
Keeping score
Winkelried collected $53.4 million in compensation in 2006. He earned $67.5 million in cash and stock in 2007.
Board game
A trustee of his alma mater, Winkelried donated $5 million to the University of Chicago to fund student scholarships and endow several professorships in his parents' names.
Off hours
Winkelried is a cowboy, and not in the metaphorical sense: He's a cutter—that's the sport where riders have to separate a calf away from a cattle herd—and he regularly competes in competitions. He also owns a number of pricey stallions. In 2005, he plunked down $460,000 for a horse named "I Sho Spensive."
Personal
Jon is married to Abby Lipsey Winkelried, with whom he has three kids: Matt, Jen, and Jane. The family lives in Short Hills and has a home in Nantucket. The Winkelrieds also have a ranch just outside of Meeker, Colorado, which they purchased in 2000. It's home to 650 cows and horses.
