Who
Scion of real estate developer Jack Pomeranc, man-about-town Jason is responsible for boutique hotels like 60 Thompson and Thompson LES in New York, and the Roosevelt in LA.
Backstory
Pomeranc grew up in the real estate biz: His father Jack founded development and construction firm the Pomeranc Group in 1956, and Jason's brothers Larry and Michael (who are 17 and 14 years older than him, respectively) have spent their entire careers working for the family business. A Cardozo law school grad, Jason started his career as an attorney. He returned to the family fold in 1997, bringing a hipper sensibility to a company whose holdings included profitable—but unexciting—properties like a handful of Hiltons and Ramadas in suburban New Jersey.
Pomeranc put himself on the map in 2001 when he opened 60 Thompson in SoHo, which quickly became a hangout for the young and trendy. (Eerily, the hotel's grand opening took place on September 10, 2001.) He's since replicated the formula with the Sagamore in Miami and the Roosevelt Hotel in LA, as well as revived a 23-room inn in Sonoma, Calif. called the Gaige House. Jason handles the creative and publicity aspects at Pomeranc and its offshoot, Thompson Hotels, while his older brothers concentrate on financing, construction, and overseeing the company's less sexy holdings.
Of note
Pomeranc's properties have run into numerous snags in recent years. His long-gestating 6 Columbus was originally planned for a 2005 opening; after repeated assurances that it was just "weeks away," it finally debuted in late 2007. Similar delays have plagued branches of the Thompson on the Lower East Side and in Beverly Hills. Pomeranc has had issues with existing properties as well. In 2006, the Pomeranc Group bowed out of the Sagamore in Miami, severing ties with its partner on the project, Marty Taplin, amid rumors that the company was neglecting the hotel as it focused on its newer hotels. The chronic setbacks, however, haven't stopped Pomeranc from plunging into new deals. He's announced new hotel developments in Tribeca (the Smyth) and Washington, D.C.
Personal
Pomeranc's pretty boy looks—and real estate money—have made him popular on the New York-LA-Miami circuit. He briefly dated Hollywood bad girl Shannen Doherty in 2004, and was most recently involved with fashion publicist Ali Wise. He lives in Tribeca and has a second home in LA.
No joke
Pomeranc added movie producer to his résumé in 2006 when he debuted a 12-minute short called L.A. Suite. The film, which was shot at the Roosevelt Hotel in LA, featured sultry banter between two ridiculously good-looking actors. One blogger described it as the "inanest, slickest piece of LA marketry ever."
