Who

Nederlander—known as "Jimmy Jr."—is a Broadway producer and heir-apparent to the Nederlander Organization, the city's second-largest Broadway theater chain.

Backstory

Nederlander has been in the theater business since he took his first breath. His grandfather David founded the Nederlander Organization in 1912 with a single theater in Detroit; his legendary father Jimmy eventually took over the family biz and proceeded to expand nationwide, acquiring venues in Cleveland, Chicago, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, and London, among other cities. Raised in what had become one of the country's most prominent theatrical families, Jimmy Jr. went to work for the family business as a teen, and has since worked in every department, from box office to marketing to booking to producing. Today the company is the second-largest theatre chain in the city and owns and/or runs Minskoff, Neil Simon, Palace, Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, the Brooks Atkinson, Lunt-Fontanne, Marquis, and Nederlander Theatre.

Of note

In recent years, Jimmy Jr. has been involved in staging a number of big productions including The Times They Are A-Changin (the Bob Dylan musical), Tarzan, Wicked, and Hairspray. (He's taken home Tonys for his revival of La Cage Aux Folles, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Private Lives.) He's also turned his eye to international expansion, and has made a big push to expand to Asia. With his dad now in his mid-80s, Jimmy Jr. is expected to take over the reins as chairman one day soon.

Family ties

Grandpa, dad and junior aren't the only Nederlanders in the theater business. Jimmy Jr.'s uncle, Robert is a major theater producer; Robert's son, Eric, is involved in the business, too. (Eric is the one who made the papers after his wife of less than a month, Jessica Sklar, dumped him for Jerry Seinfeld.) And two of James Jr.'s cousins, Amy Nederlander-Case and Scott Nederlander are also theater producers.

Personal

Nederlander is married to Margo McNabb. The couple lives in the illustrious San Remo building, where their neighbors include Diane Keaton, Scott Rudin, and Bono.
