Who

A liposuction pro, Pitman is the man many socialites call when they want some cellulite vacuumed out of their thighs.

Backstory

A graduate of Williams and UPenn's medical school, Pitman moved to New York to complete his general surgery residency at Columbia-Presbyterian before training in plastic surgery at NYU. By 1982, he was an attending plastic surgeon at Bellevue and Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat hospitals and an assistant professor at NYU Medical School. He's been affiliated with both institutions since and now works at MEETH alongside fellow cosmetic surgery stars Daniel Baker, Sherrell Aston, and Alan Matarasso.

Of note

Although Pitman does it all—brow lifts, chemical peels, Botox, laser resurfacing—he's especially famous for liposuction, and was one of the first surgeons to start performing the procedure in the early '80s. (It was invented by a French doctor in the late '70s.) The author of a definitive textbook on the subject, Liposuction & Aesthetic Surgery, he performs an innovative "power-assisted" method that minimizes scarring and contours difficult areas like calves and ankles. He's also known for his face-lifting abilities, particularly his "mini-maxi lift" where he pulls both the skin and the muscle tight in a technique designed to minimize scarring. Beauty, of course, doesn't come cheap—he charges $10,000 for the ankle and calf liposuction, and the wait can be long. Like other plastic surgeons, he says he's busiest each spring, when women book appointments for body contouring before Memorial Day.

Personal

Pitman is divorced from fashion designer Kay Unger Pitman. They have two sons, Sam and Max. Pitman lives in an East 73rd Street apartment he bought for a little over $3 million in 2000.

“I’ve got a trophy wife and didn’t even have to go through an ugly divorce!” When my husband made that comment to me last summer I knew I had made the right decision by choosing Gerald Pitman to perform my abdominoplasty and breast reduction. I have trusted Dr. Pitman on two additional occasions to perform liposuction. Although the first liposuction and the “tummy tuck” were performed at Manhattan Eye and Ear where the standards for care and safety are very high I was exceptionally impressed during my latest procedure which was performed under local anesthesia in Dr. Pitman’s private surgical suite. Safety is clearly tantamount in his practice. It’s obvious that Dr. Pitman is passionate about his work. He cares for and respects his patients. His demeanor can be quite serious but not without warmth. Get him to smile; he’s got a great one! A bit of advice from experience: Lately much has been written about the many new liposuction devices/technologies that have come to market. Don’t visit his office with the notion that you’ll tell him which device you want used. He’s a magician with them all and knows which technology would be most appropriate in any given circumstance; you are paying him for his skill and experience. Dr. Pitman’s staff is terrific. They are professional, courteous and warm and do a great job of making what can be an anxiety provoking experience much more comfortable. I enthusiastically recommend Dr. Pitman.

I recently had an upper eye lift and face/neck lift by Dr. Pitman and for me; this was the best gift EVER! The adage of aging gracefully is more than just words of compassion. Dr. Pitman added vitality to this mother of five and grandmother of 13. I exercise daily and Dr. Pitman reversed the clock so that my face matches my toned body and I now added a “bounce” to my gait. Most importantly, experiencing a balanced combination of an amazingly skilled physician yet personable, caring, kind and attentive is a rare find. Dr. Pitman’s collaborative approach and goals and true desire to make you happy together with his down to earth humility and integrity is unmatched. His work was done subtlety, softly and remarkably effective. He monitored the procedure and aftercare recovery personally and was always there for me to answer any and all questions. I found him to be very accessible from weeks prior to my surgery to the many aftercare weeks later. In fact, during one of my aftercare visits he noticed something totally unrelated and immediately arranged for me to see a highly regarded specialist nearby for treatment that day. I highly recommend Dr. Pitman. He’s the best!
