Who
Kallman is the co-chairman and CEO of Atlantic Records, the Warner-affiliated label that's home to Gnarls Barkley, James Blunt, Jewel, Missy Elliott, Lil Kim and Rob Thomas.
Backstory
The son of a Manhattan film attorney, Kallman started out as a DJ, college music rep, and dance music promoter before launching his own label, Big Beat, in 1987. When Atlantic's then-CEO Doug Morris bought out Big Beat in 1991, Kallman went along for the ride and worked his way up the Atlantic bureaucracy, eventually becoming co-president of the label. In 2004, after Warner Music was sold to Edgar Bronfman Jr. and the label was merged with Elektra, Kallman was named COO and co-chairman of the Atlantic Records Group. He was elevated to CEO in 2005 after his boss, Warner Music's Lyor Cohen, escorted his rival, Jason Flom, out the door.
Of note
Kallman takes credit for discovering Aaliyah, Missy Elliott, Brandy, Junior M.A.F.I.A., Sean Paul, P.O.D. and mega-producer Timbaland. More recently, he foisted indie rockers Death Cab For Cutie on America. In addition to Cohen, who oversees all of the labels at Warner Music, Kallman works closely with Julie Greenwald, Atlantic's president.
Personal
Kallman's wife, Isabel, is a former banker who founded AlphaMom, a media company targeted to new mothers. Isabel was the subject of a feature in New York in 2005, which she's since described as "a snarky personal 'expose'" and an "exaggerated caricature of a mother." The Kallman's have one son, Ryland, and live on East 62nd Street. Their apartment contains Craig's collection of almost 300,000 vinyl LPs.
