Who

Critical darling Schorr is known for her pictures of sexually ambiguous teenagers.

Backstory

Schorr was born and raised in Brooklyn; her dad was a photographer, writer, and publisher of muscle car and girlie magazines. Collier's own photography career got off the ground in the late 1980s after she graduated from SVA and started taking photos of adolescents—mostly androgynous men—territory she used to comment on issues around sex and gender. In 1998, Schorr's big moment arrived when she exhibited photos of German teenagers dressed as Swedish soldiers juxtaposed with photos of actual Swedish soldiers; the show caused a sensation in the art world. She generated even more attention at the 2002 Whitney Biennial with a series of photos that restaged Andre Wyeth's famous series of paintings of his neighbor Helga—Schorr's version featured a teenage boy she met on a train in Germany. Over the past decade, her work's been seen at a number of notable venues, including the Walker Arts Center in Minneapolis, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. She's represented by Lisa Spellman's 303 Gallery.

On the side

Outside the white walls of the gallery world, she's taken photos for i-D, Vogue Hommes International, the New York Times Magazine, and Details. (Memorably, she had Lindsay Lohan pose as Eve in the Garden of Eden for a shoot.) She also teaches a class at SVA, her alma mater.

Personal

The androgynous Schorr lives in Williamsburg. Her private collection of photographs includes works by Mitch Epstein, Gregory Crewdson, Frank Lebowitz, Patrick Demarchelier, and Garry Winogrand. She also keeps a collection of baseball cards, sports equipment, and army uniforms. She spends her summers in Germany.
