Who

One of New York's most flamboyant criminal defense attorneys, Cutler's the man to talk to if you're a mafia crime boss facing a trial.

Backstory

Defending the mob is a Cutler family tradition: Bruce's father, Murray Cutler, was a noted criminal defense attorney in Brooklyn. Raised in Flatbush, Bruce attended Poly Prep and Hamilton (where he wrestled and played football) before moving on to Brooklyn Law and starting out as a Brooklyn assistant district attorney. In 1981, Cutler switched sides and went to work for noted criminal defense attorney Barry Slotnick.

He went out on his own five years later and soon became a household name thanks to his role as John Gotti's defense attorney during the late 1980s and '90s. In all, Cutler won three acquittals for the Mafia don—it was largely thanks to Cutler that Gotti earned the moniker the "Teflon Don"—but when Gotti was brought up on murder charges in 1992, prosecutors managed to have Cutler thrown off the case. Unfortunately for Gotti, it was the one big case he ended up losing—and he earned a life sentence. Cutler has kept a lower profile since the glory days of the Mob, but he remains one of the top defense attorneys in the city.

Of note

Cutler returned to the front pages of the tabloids in 2005 when he teamed up with Ed Hayes to defend NYC's "Mafia Cops," Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa. The trial was a loser for the veteran attorneys: Both men were ultimately convicted of racketeering although the presiding judge, Jack Weinstein, dismissed the charges since the statue of limitations had run out. (The cops later sued Hayes and Cutler, claiming they'd provided incompetent counsel.)

Cutler resurfaced a few months later when he joined music producer Phil Spector's defense team. But Cutler appeared to have trouble finding his bearings in the LA courtroom. Following a disastrous opening statement and a scolding from the judge, Cutler was sidelined by Spector before abandoning the case altogether a few months later. He's since debuted a shlocky syndicated TV show, Jury Duty, in which he plays a judge.

In person

The bald-domed attorney is about as intimidating as they come: He's invariably described in the press as a linebacker or tugboat, and his raspy voice led Eddie Hayes to once quip that Cutler "gargles Brillo pads for breakfast." Cutler's courtroom style is equally fearsome. His cross-examinations were so aggressive back in the day that they were dubbed "Brucifixions." Like fellow defense attorneys Murray Richman and Ben Brafman, Cutler has also made a name for himself thanks to his dramatic flair. In one particularly entertaining display at a 1987 Gotti trial, Cutler called the indictment "a rancid stew" made with "bad meat and bad potatoes" which " belongs in the garbage" and then promptly dumped the offending documents in a trash can before a rapt jury. The moment was written into a script for Miami Vice.

In print

Cutler co-authored a 2003 autobiography, Closing Argument: Defending (and Befriending) John Gotti, and Other Legal Battles I Have Waged.

Soundbite

Cutler and Ed Hayes have been close pals since they met in 1981 and Cutler is the godfather of Hayes's daughter, Avery. "If there's anything I love in the world, it's a tough Brooklyn Jew, and Bruce is a tough Brooklyn Jew," Hayes once said. "He's the Irish brother I never had," Cutler replied in kind.

Personal

Cutler's been married and divorced twice. (He met his first wife, Gladys, during his high school years. His second wife was named Barbara.) He has one son, Michael Cutler, who was born in 1997. Currently single, he lives on the Upper West Side.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Cutler didn't win any cases for John Gotti (May he rest in hell). Members of the juries in the cases in question had been bribed. Perhaps Cutler isn't as good as a lawyer as he'd like the world to believe. Also, why hasn't this guy been disbarred? He's been caught on FBI tapes discussing Cosa Nostra business with Gotti and Gotti famously stated “Gambino crime family? This is the Shargel, Cutler crime family.” Then again, this is the State bar that produced Roy Cohn and they didn’t disbar him until he was on his deathbed. Nobody can accuse New York of having overly honest or ethical lawyers.

Dear Mr. Cutler, This letter is written with the hopes that you may be the one who can provide some direction and or insight into a serious "life issue" I've been wrestling with, regarding a woman I Loved with all my Heart. Her name was Samantha Spencer Cutler. I've been in the process of posting a couple of blogs, notably Art Harris, to try and get your assistance. Then I realized, that you have earned and deserve the respect of me just finding an address and sending you a letter directly. I hope this letter gets to you. I'm preparing to circulate a non-fiction love story about a wonderful and amazing woman I loved and knew for a year and a half. She died of cancer on May 27, 2007, at the age of 30 after returning to her brother’s home in N.C. to have Kidney Surgery. This is a story of our Love, her life as she told me, her family and the price of secrecy. My dilemma is this; her family never contacted me when she passed. Only a quick e-mail notifying me that she passed... They all knew and told me repeatedly how much she loved me, but they could not talk to me or give me closure for privacy reasons. Here's a piece one of many messages received from her best friend and now sister in-law. Received: Tue 7/22 As far as who she is, you still don't know, but do know this, SHE LOVED YOU WITH ALL HER HEART, SHE KNEW YOU WERE THE ONE MAN THAT WOULD OF BEEN HER SOULD MATE. And the information I have on Sam is this: -Her name was Bernice Samantha Spencer Cutler. She went by Samantha Spencer. =Brother Jake - Father, Bruce -Mother, Bernice Spencer Sam had told me her father passed away 7 years ago and her mom in about 1988. I know Sam's father and Grandfather were both attorneys and sometimes defended Suspected members of Organized Crime. Sam was a beautiful young woman with everything going for her, except the time to be happy. She was also cursed with secrets and shared some of them.. I never asked or confirmed this one though. I'm sure you can understand my concern. I know the names are the Same, but Sam had told me her father had passed away 7 years ago. And as I'm sure you know, none of the other family members match up with your published biography information. But there are too many similarities, and I'm a little uncomfortable about circulating this book without doing everything I can to find "closure" and "Peace of Mind" with Sam's death, so I can move on. I have never wanted anything from Sam's death, except closure and to have loving thoughts of her until my time came. I understood throughout our relationship, that Samantha had serious privacy issues and I always respected them. But, when she died and all I received were a couple e-mails saying how much she loved me, and no service, no phone call, nothing, I could never put this to rest. I've tried everything, to get past this, and nothing works... And finally, her family told me it was Sam's wish that I was angry and hurt after she died, so I could move on with more ease. That, I can never believe. She called me the day before she died; just to tell me how much she loved me. The family stated that what she did was wrong and unthinkable. That just drove me even harder. Is there a possibility that because of the similarities, you have heard of this family before? If so, maybe you can provide some direction on this, and/or recommend someone who can assist me. Maybe even yourself? I've also thought of the possibility that because of security or just the necessity of privacy, that Sam could have been your daughter. If that is the case, then I'm really screwed here. I'm in an awful position, only wanting to have closure and put my Princess to Rest. And also my own Peace of mind. I've never wanted to do anything that Sam wouldn't want me to do. But I'm certain she would never want me to forsake her, or be angry at her. I Loved her with all my Heart, and I know she Loved Me. There has been one previous letter sent on the 13th of this month attempting to contact you. There is no disrespect intended. If you could please have an assistant notify me that you have received the letter. If this has nothing to do with you and you are too busy to assist me, I understand. Thank You for any direction or assistance you can provide. Appreciate your help. Respectfully and Sincerely,
