Who
A money manager and the husband of Celerie Kemble, Boykin Curry operates Playa Grande, an invite-only "utopia" in the Dominican Republic.
Backstory
Curry grew up in Summit, NJ and attended Yale and Harvard Business School before signing on at Morgan Stanley and, later, Mark Kingdon's hedge fund, Kingdon Capital. Curry eventually joined Eagle Capital, the money management firm founded by his father, Ravenel Boykin Curry III, which counts the Chapin School, New York Daily News, National Geographic, and the Art Institute of Chicago among its clients.
Boykin is just as well known for his presence in non-profit and society circles, as well as his efforts to create Playa Grande, a retreat in the Dominican Republic. A 2,000-acre Soho House-by-the sea (albeit more exclusive and luxurious), Curry is now building the "creative person's utopia" in conjunction with Aman Resorts, the luxury hotel builder. Founding members include Richard Meier, Fareed Zakaria, Moby, Michael Stipe, Mariska Hargitay, Charlie Rose, hedge fund manager Mike Novogratz and party planner Bronson Van Wyck. So how do you gain entry to Playa Grande? You don't—you just have to wait for Curry's call.
Pet causes
The politically-minded Curry has raised money for Cory Booker and Eliot Spitzer, and has made donations to David Paterson, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama. Other causes near and dear include Girls Prep, a charter school for inner-city girls, the Alliance for School Choice, Democrats for Education Reform, and Young Friends of MTC.
Personal
Curry's profile was raised considerably when he married interior designer Celerie Kemble, a prominent Palm Beach socialite. In 2006, Boykin and Celerie had their first child, Ravenel Boykin Curry V (who they call "Rascal"); they had a daughter in 2008 named Zinnia. The family lives in the Trump Parc building on Central Park South with their Jack Russell terrier, Anchovy. In 2009, they signed a five-year lease on Grey Gardens, the famed East Hampton mansion owned by Sally Quinn and Ben Bradlee.
