A Room with a View (of Diane von Furstenberg)

141522

Most people were pretty pleased when Andre Balazs's Standard hotel opened in the meatpacking district late last year. One person who reportedly wasn't: designer Diane von Furstenberg, who, it's said, was a little miffed that hotel guests would now be able to look out of their windows and down into her glassy penthouse apartment atop the DVF store around the corner. Balazs downplayed any reports of tension. (They'd "share views of each other," the hotelier explained.) But we can now see why she may not have been so thrilled by her new neighbor. Judging by these hi-res photos taken by a random hotel guest who uploaded them to Flickr—and didn't know what he was taking pictures of—the view isn't half bad.

The Feeling's Mutual

JPMorgan Chase has started changing over the signage at branches of Washington Mutual to reflect its bargain-basement acquisition last fall. The sign outside the branch on Delancey hasn't been swapped out yet, though. Is JPMorgan looking to save a few bucks by not replacing the bulbs? Or is there some sort of coded message here considering the sign now spells out "Was Mutual"? It's a mystery! [Bowery Boogie]

The Other Side of Cannes

141017Cannes has been buzzing for several days now, and you've probably seen dozens of photos of the same celebrities walking up the same red carpet, all doing their very best to seem interested in the hoopla around them. But what are the stars seeing as they move from premiere to premiere? A very different view of the Cannes Film Festival—from the vantage point of, say, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt—below.More

Rachel Maddow's Secret Formula | We always figured it took something really special for Rachel Maddow to be able to put up with Keith Olbermann every evening. Now we have the answer, courtesy of author/Mac pitchman John Hodgman: A bit of La Fée absinthe mixed with Red Bull, apparently. [Twitpic via BYOT]

A Guide to NYC's New Taxi Fleet

140121If you hailed a cab a few years ago, your choice was limited to a Ford Crown Victoria or Chevrolet Caprice. Things have changed a bit since then: In addition to credit card machines and annoying screens in the backseat that dispense the news and weather (plus possibly more hi-tech features to come!), there are now more than a dozen different taxi models roaming the streets, many of which have been introduced in recent months as part of a plan to make the city's fleet of yellow cabs more green. An (incomplete) overview of your options—thanks to photographer SoCalMetro—can be seen by clicking on the image above.

Socialites Embrace Their Trashy Sides

Derek Blasberg celebrated his birthday on Friday night with a "White Trash Black Tie" party, a theme the socials in attendance—like Fabiola Beracasa and Julia Restoin Roitfeld, above—clearly took to heart. Another photo of Fabiola with Byrdie Bell after the jump.More

Masked, Swine Flu-Fearing Hotties, Part 1

139713

As fear of the swine flu spreads around the world a whole lot faster than swine flu itself, photographers everywhere were suddenly handed an unexpected, new task: bringing us pictures of masked travelers. And who knew, it turns out there's something weirdly alluring—in a mysterious, behind-the-veil kind of way—about the humble white germ mask. Okay, maybe it's just us, but we've assembled a photo collection of masked, swine flu-fearing hotties anyway. The all-female edition is below. The male edition coming up shortly!More

New York's Most Depressing Storefront

138956

Dozens of stores have closed their doors in recent months and as you've probably noticed, very few have been replaced by new tenants. Both Jeremiah's Vanishing New York and EV Grieve have been collecting photos of the retail horror show unfolding across town, although we're going to have to award the store pictured above—located on East Sixth Street near Avenue A—as the most depressing (and most reminicent of the scary old NYC you see in photos from the '70s). Of course, if you happen to know of one that's worse, feel free to let us know about it.
